Winnipeg City

The Forks is the 'heart' of Winnipeg. In the community's early years, this was here the traders and explorers set out for points west, navigating along the banks of the Assiniboine River. It now has a festival market, a children's museum, paddlewheel boat tours, and of course, a National Historic Site.

Main Street was, in fact, called the Garry Road until the mid-1870s. Despite its historic associations, in 1979 the city council closed most of the junction to pedestrians in return for the construction of an underground shopping concourse, Winnipeg Square. While you're here, have a look at the grand Neoclassical Bank of Montréal on the southeast side of the intersection, its fussily carved capitals in stark contrast to the sharp, clean lines of its skyscraper neighbours. The intersection is also known as the windiest of any city or town in Canada.

With over 1300 restaurants to choose from, Winnipeg is renowned for its culinary variety and hospitality. The wide variety of ethnic restaurants are the exception, ranging from deluxe establishments serving fine French and Italian delicacies, through to Ukrainian and French-Canadian restaurant-bars that cater mainly for their own communities. In the more expensive places it's possible to pay upwards of $50 per person for a full dinner, but $25 per head is a reasonable average elsewhere. Many of Winnipeg's more staid restaurants and restaurant-bars are concentrated in and around the downtown shopping malls, but there's a cluster of more interesting ones in Osborne Village and the Exchange District.

Approximately 375,000 people are employed in Winnipeg and the surrounding area. Winnipeg's largest employers are either government or government funded institutions: The Province of Manitoba, The City of Winnipeg, The University of Manitoba, The Health Sciences Centre, The Casinos of Winnipeg, and Manitoba Hydro. Winnipeg is one fun-loving urban metropolis, with great restaurants, nightlife, and other great happenings.
