St John s Travel Guide

City of Saint John

St John's is on the eastern edge of the spectacular Avalon Peninsula, the most easterly part of North America.

The St John's has hundreds of restaurants, ranging from diners and fast food for families and a quick bite, up to the four-star establishments where a nice dinner for two can easily be a hundred dollars

There are a decent number of pubs and bars dotted around the centre that regularly showcase island musicians, who vary enormously in quality and the type of music they play, ranging from what sounds like C&W with an eccentric nautical twist, through to traditional unaccompanied ballads. If you're content to take pot luck, follow the crowds along George Street, but otherwise ask for advice at O'Brien's Music Store , 278 Water St (tel 753-8135), where you can also get a comprehensive list of future gigs.

Running the length of the town centre, Water Street has long been the commercial hub of St John's, though the jumbled storefronts of the chandlers and tanners, ship suppliers and fish merchants have mostly been replaced by a series of ill-considered redevelopments. In the architectural gloom, look out for the odd elegant stone and brick facade or take a peek at the old courthouse , a monumental Romanesque Revival building of 1904 that overlooks the harbour from Water Street at Baird's Cove.
