The Twentieth century
Paris had become the artistic centre of Europe in the 19th century and the school of Paris continued as a model for inspiration in the 20th century. Following the elements used in Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in the early years of the twentieth century colour and content were also used. The twentieth century art style recopilated some other techniques from African art. The innovations of postimpressionism, were influenced of by Cézanne. Famous artists such as Picasso and Braque created cubism.
In sculpture two artists were recognized for their work: Aristide Maillol and the Romanian Constanin Brancusi. They worked in Paris and their style influenced twentieth century sculpture. Other major sculptors were: Charles Despiau, Henri Laurens, and Raymond Duchamp-Villon who also had created some great works of art.
Graffiti was incorporated by Ben Vautier, artist of the Flixux movement. Niki de Saint-Phalle created bloated and vibrant plastic figures. César Baldaccini produced a series of large compressed object-sculptures and Arman gathered together gathered objects in boxed or resin-coated assemblages. Many modern artists continue to be haunted by the horrors of World War II and the terrible Holocaust. Christian Boltanski's harrowing installations of the lost and the anonymous are particularly powerful.
